Cell Phone Ringtones

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

If you own a cell phone then you are probably familiar with the term ringtones. A ringtone is the sound or music your cell phone plays to alert you that you have an incoming call.

There are several types of ringtones available - polyphonic and monophonic. Monophonic ringtones are tunes that are comprised of a single tone. Polyphonic ringtones are the most popular and consist of a tune that is comprised of multiple tones, thus producing a more full sound. Both polyphonic and monophonic ringtones can be downloaded from ringtone shops on the internet or downloaded directly from your cellular service provider. Some ringtones are free while others may cost you anywhere from .50cents to $2.00 per tune. There are also some ringtone sites that will allow you to download either a set number or an unlimited number of ringtones per month for a flat monthly fee. This type of fee arrangement may be the most cost effective if you wish to download ringtones on a frequent basis.

Ringtones are a cheap and fun way to personalize your cell phone. Depending on your musical taste you will be hip hopping, waltzing or be-bopping to the beat everytime you get a call!

NOAA Weather Radars

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) National Weather Service is responsible for monitoring the weather throughout the country. They track weather and climate trends as well as current conditions. There are a series of NOAA weather radars that help them do their job.

NOAA weather radars use NEXRAD or Next Generation Radar to gather data that will help us understand current and future weather conditions. There are four types of images that come about because of this technology. These are base reflectivity, composite reflectivity, one-hour precipitation and storm total precipitation.

Base reflectivity measures the strength of the signal that is reflected back to the antennae. From this, you can spot any precipitation, understand and measure a storm’s makeup, establish whether or not a hailstorm is possible and better understand the atmosphere. Composite reflectivity is often compared with base reflectivity. This helps us understand a given storm’s general makeup and its strength. One-hour precipitation reports help establish rainfall amount and assess any flash food warnings. Storm-total precipitation is an image that represents how much rainfall or precipitation is determined for a storm.

The National Weather Service has a very comprehensive website that will help you learn more about the NOAA weather radars. The radar images on their site are updated every thirty minutes. The different colors that are visible on the image represent rainfall rates. Since there is such a variety of colors, you will have to find a chart either online or in a textbook that can help you.

The role of the NOAA National Weather Service is to help predict the weather and warn us of any danger such as hurricanes or flash floods. Through the use of the various NOAA weather radars, we are able to stay informed about current and future weather conditions.

Weather Radars provides detailed information on Weather Radars, NOAA Weather Radars, National Weather Service Radars, Local Weather Radars and more. Weather Radars is affiliated with School Wireless Weather Stations.

Efficient Transportation Systems

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

We see in the organized world of the Japanese with their transit systems and floating airports and super engineering anti-Tsunami bridges many ideas in the theory of flow, which assists every part of their society and civilizations. They are masters of the flow of transportations and work hard to perfect every aspect and detail of their transportation system.

We can learn a little bit from their ideas in the system of flows and simplicity once the giant infrastructure projects are finally completed. We have some really great borderline world-class transportations systems in the US, but they are not cohesive in all regards, but with a little fine tuning they certainly could be and with all the space we have in this country we have so many possibilities of making it logistically perfect, people friendly, efficient in operation, safe from International Terrorists, redundant without worry of break down and cost effective to increase usage and confidence with the patrons. To do this we must prevent trucking over regulation, which is duplicated in every state and often contradictory. EPA laws have to take into consideration the free-market mechanism to clean the air.

We have seen severe restrictions and deadlines forced on the trucking industry which should have been better planned and more carefully considered prior to their enactment. When large items need to travel down existing roadways and are considered wide loads, long loads or oversized loads they often have different rules for different states, highways, federal and even some counties have their own rules. Making it difficult to get a much needed part to a power plant, military base, infrastructure project, building, government agency or individual. When businesses have to deal with all these different, often redundant rules and regulations they cannot use the existing transportation system and when these things happens it hurts the flow of products and services to the over all people that it was built to serve. In addition to this every permit, fee, fine or rule imposed causes and increase in cost and an over all tax on society. When we slow any form of transportation, increase regulations these costs are passed on. Think about it.

Desktop Security Software Risks - Part 2

Friday, October 31st, 2008

This is the third in a series of articles highlighting reasons why we need a new model for anti-virus and security solutions.

Reason #2: the Desktop Security Software Risks

The risks of placing software on the desktop are such that I will be breaking this article into two parts.

There are many advantages to putting security and anti-virus software on the desktop. They range from efficiency to money. Under previous ways of thinking if I can capture security and virus problems at the desktop I can prevent them from going any farther. That works well in a non-connected environment. In the connected environment it makes more sense to centralize the software and monitor connections in and out. Basically “firewall” all the appliances from each other.

In a previous article we discussed the security risks inherent with desktop software designed to be the protection layer between you and all those bad people out there on the Internet. Here now we will discuss some more mundane issues regarding the risks of putting security software on the desktop: Drag Drag steals clock-cycles from your processes so that it can run in a higher priority mode. Anti-virus software especially places a drag on your computer. Depending on your settings (and the default settings are usually very aggressive), every time you run a program or open a file, real-time file scanning takes place and your files are scanned for viruses. This slows down your processing. Accessing larger files takes longer. You can see a discernible lag time between when you start a program/open a file and when you can actually access it. Compatibility After the obvious issue of “drag” is compatibility. Often security and anti-virus rules get in the way of your doing business on your computer. While you may get away with using older versions of such packages as Word, Sims, Photoshop, etc. on your computer with the new XP operating system, it’s unlikely your security software will be completely compatible. Why? Many packages rely on very low-level functionality to be able to do the tasks they set out to do. Anti-virus packages have to be able to operate at a level closer to the hardware than most packages. They need to do this to prevent virus software from taking precedence from them. While many packages offer backward-compatibility the opposite is not true: forward-compatibility. There are several reasons for this: a package written for Windows 98 will not anticipate all the changes to the operating system that are implemented for Windows XP. While your Win98 anti-virus program may work under XP, it won’t work at its peak performance. It can’t. It’s just another reason for centralizing your security. By siphoning all your traffic through a security screen at your ISP, for instance, you offload the need for updates and staying up-to-date on your security software. This then becomes the job of the service provider. Updates Having the software on your desktop means you are responsible for maintaining that software. In the case of office productivity software or image editing software, if new versions come out with features you’re not interested in, you don’t update. With new viruses appearing on the landscape every day, you can’t afford not to continually update your software. If you don’t update for a month or two, you run severe risks of infection. You also will incur potential long update cycles as your software has to be upgraded to handle all the new threats. This makes the desktop these days a somewhat ineffective solution. Nearly two-thirds of all the PCs that have anti-virus protection installed do not update their definitions regularly. These PCs might as well uninstall the software for all the good it’s doing them. Lost Time As mentioned in the above discussion, you can lose considerable time if you don’t update regularly. Long intervals between updates can translate into long update cycles. If you have a slow connection to a vendor, your down time is much longer as you have to wait for the files to be downloaded and then you have to wait for your software to update itself. Solution The better solution is to move to a centralized solution in which all the software, all the updates are the responsibility of the service provider. You pay for the service of having your email cleaned before you receive it. When email arrives at your service provider’s mailbox, it is checked for malicious tendencies and stripped if bad. You notice no long waiting, no downtime, no drag, no incompatibilities.

CAUTION!qURA’AN IS NOT JUST A BOOK …..READ TO LEARN THE MIRACLES OF QURA’AN

THE SCIENTIFIC MIRACLES OF THE QUR’AN

INTRODUCTION Fourteen centuries ago, God sent down the Qur’an to mankind as a book of guidance. He called upon people to be guided to the truth by adhering to this book. From the day of its revelation to the day of judgement, this last divine book will remain the sole guide for humanity. The matchless style of the Qur’an and the superior wisdom in it are definite evidence that it is the word of God. In addition, the Qur’an has many miraculous attributes proving that it is a revelation from God. One of these attributes is the fact that a number of scientific truths that we have only been able to uncover by the technology of the 20th century were stated in the Qur’an 1,400 years ago. Of course the Qur’an is not a book of science. However, many scientific facts that are expressed in an extremely concise and profound manner in its verses have only been discovered with the technology of the 20th century. These facts could not have been known at the time of the Qur’an’s revelation, and this is still more proof that the Qur’an is the word of God. In order to understand the scientific miracle of the Qur’an, we must first take a look at the level of science at the time when this holy book was revealed. In the 7th century, when the Qur’an was revealed, Arab society had many superstitious and groundless beliefs where scientific issues were concerned. Lacking the technology to examine the universe and nature, these early Arabs believed in legends inherited from past generations. They supposed, for example, that mountains supported the sky above. They believed that the earth was flat and that there were high mountains at its both ends. It was thought that these mountains were pillars that kept the vault of heaven high above. However all these superstitious beliefs of Arab society were eliminated with the Qur’an. In Sura Sad, verse 2, it was said: “God is He who raised up the heavens without any support…” (The Qur’an, 13:2). This verse invalidated the belief that the sky remains above because of the mountains. In many other subjects, important facts were revealed at a time when no one could have known them. The Qur’an, which was revealed at a time when people knew very little about astronomy, physics, or biology, contains key facts on a variety of subjects such as the creation of the universe, the creation of the human being, the structure of the atmosphere, and the delicate balances that make life on earth possible. Now, let us look at some of these scientific miracles revealed in the Qur’an together. THE COMING OF THE UNIVERSE INTO EXISTENCE The origin of the universe is described in the Qur’an in the following verse: He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. (The Qur’an, 6:101) This information given in the Qur’an is in full agreement with the findings of contemporary science. The conclusion that astrophysics has reached today is that the entire universe, together with the dimensions of matter and time, came into existence as a result of a great explosion that occurred in no time. This event, known as “The Big Bang” proved that the universe was created from nothingness as the result of the explosion of a single point. Modern scientific circles are in agreement that the Big Bang is the only rational and provable explanation of the beginning of the universe and of how the universe came into being. Before the Big Bang, there was no such thing as matter. From a condition of non-existence in which neither matter, nor energy, nor even time existed, and which can only be described metaphysically, matter, energy, and time were all created. This fact, only recently discovered by modern physics, was announced to us in the Qur’an 1,400 years ago.

THE EXPANSION OF THE UNIVERSE In the Qur’an, which was revealed 14 centuries ago at a time when the science of astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described like this: And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it. (The Qur’an, 51:47) The word “heaven”, as stated in this verse, is used in various places in the Qur’an with the meaning of space and universe. Here again, the word is used with this meaning. In other words, in the Qur’an it is revealed that the universe “expands”. And this is the very conclusion that science has reached today. Until the dawn of the 20th century, the only view prevailing in the world of science was that “the universe has a constant nature and it has existed since infinite time”. The research, observations, and calculations carried out by means of modern technology, however, have revealed that the universe in fact had a beginning, and that it constantly “expands”. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian physicist Alexander Friedmann and the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaitre theoretically calculated that the universe is in constant motion and that it is expanding. This fact was proved also by observational data in 1929. While observing the sky with a telescope, Edwin Hubble, the American astronomer, discovered that the stars and galaxies were constantly moving away from each other. A universe where everything constantly moves away from everything else implied a constantly expanding universe. The observations carried out in the following years verified that the universe is constantly expanding. This fact was explained in the Qur’an when that was still unknown to anyone. This is because the Qur’an is the word of God, the Creator, and the Ruler of the entire universe.

THE SPLITTING ASUNDER OF “THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH” Another verse about the creation of the heavens is as follows: Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before We clove them asunder, and We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe? (The Qur’an, 21:30) The word ratq translated as “sewn to” means “mixed in each, blended” in Arabic dictionaries. It is used to refer to two different substances that make up a whole. The phrase “we unstitched” is the verb fataqa in Arabic and implies that something comes into being by tearing apart or destroying the structure of ratq. The sprouting of a seed from the soil is one of the actions to which this verb is applied. Let us take a look at the verse again with this knowledge in mind. In the verse, sky and earth are at first subject to the status of ratq. They are separated (fataqa) with one coming out of the other. Intriguingly, when we remember the first moments of the Big Bang, we see that a single point included all the matter in the universe. In other words, everything, including “the heavens and earth” which were not created yet, were included in this point in a condition of ratq. This point exploded violently, causing its matter to fataqa and in the process created the structure of the whole universe. When we compare the expressions in the verse with scientific findings, we see that they are in perfect agreement with each other. Interestingly enough, these findings were not arrived at until the 20th century. ORBITS While referring to the Sun and the Moon in the Qur’an, it is emphasized that each moves in a definite orbit. It is He Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. They swim along, each in an orbit. (The Qur’an, 21:33) It is mentioned in another verse, too, that the Sun is not static but moves in a definite orbit: And the sun runs to its resting place. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing. (The Qur’an, 36:38) These facts communicated in the Qur’an have been discovered by astronomical observations in our age. According to the calculations of experts on astronomy, the Sun is traveling at the enormous speed of 720,000 kilometers an hour in the direction of the star Vega in a particular orbit called the Solar Apex. This means that the sun travels roughly 17,280,000 kilometers a day. Along with the Sun, and all planets and satellites within the gravitational system of the Sun also travel the same distance. In addition, all the stars in the universe are in a similar planned motion. That the entire universe is full of paths and orbits such as this one, is written in the Qur’an as follows: By the sky full of paths and orbits. (The Qur’an, 51:7) There are about 200 billion galaxies in the universe, consisting of nearly 200 billion stars in each. Most of these stars have planets, and most of those planets have satellites. All of these heavenly bodies move in very precisely computed orbits. For millions of years, each has been “swimming” along in its own orbit in perfect harmony and order with all the others. Moreover, many comets also move along in the orbits determined for them. The orbits in the universe do not only belong to celestial bodies. The galaxies also travel at enormous speeds in computed, planned orbits. During these movements, none of these celestial bodies cuts across another’s path, or collides with another. Surely at the time the Qur’an was revealed, mankind did not possess today’s telescopes or advanced observation technologies to observe millions of kilometres of space, nor the modern knowledge of physics or astronomy. Therefore, at that time, it was not possible to determine scientifically that space is “full of paths and orbits” as stated in the verse. However, this was openly declared to us in the Qur’an that was revealed at that time:-because the Qur’an is the word of God.

Successful Connections

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The term “touchy feely” has a poor connotation. It implies an over emotional response or environment. It is often used in conjunction with newage programs focused on building or reestablishing bonds between people. Anyone who is a “touchy feely” type is viewed with considerable suspicion. This is unfortunate.

If I were to define a “touchy feely” type, I would say simply that they are people who break barriers. On a physical level they regularly cross over personal barriers. They touch your arm or get within an uncomfortable distance from you. Psychologically speaking they “Get into your head.” This can be a very threatening prospect. The reason is that anyone crossing a personal barrier is viewed as having an agenda. They want something from you. Imagine the horror of facing a “touchy feely” salesman! Or if you were fortunate to have one nearby, remember your grandmother.

We don’t like the salesman, but we adore the grandmother. However, it’s what’s in between these two extremes that matters. In fact, these two images do not do justice to the process of human interaction. The truth is that no matter what type of interaction, contact between two or more people is a complexmulti dimensional laden event. There is sight, sound and smell. There is communication or an attempt at it. There is even physical contact. If you doubt the physical contact in every encounter, consider that the other person only needs to move towards you. Everytime they move, the air surrounding them is pushed towards you. Their personal atmosphere contains odors(natural or unnatural fragrances), sounds(rustling clothes) and images of their expressions and movement. The same applies to you as well.

It is the realization of this fact which is most important. “Touchy Feely” is a good thing. It actually implies a response that is in fact primed for success. Timing and appropriateness are the keys to making a successful contact. There is a time to close the distance between yourself and another individual. There is a time to present your agenda. There is an appropriate way to dress and move relative to the purpose of the contact. Ironically, both the successful salesmen and grandmothers have worked out the kinks in their presentations to avoid overwhelming the people they encounter. It’s really the bad salesmen and grandmothers we don’t like.

Step back and think about all the ways you affect the people near you. Summarize the various forms of communication that you use to bring about successful relationships. Take each one and begin researching it. For instance, you will find an endless number of articles about dressing for social and work situations. You will also come across articles that talk about the benefits of the therapeutic touch. Actually, it has been shown that a light touch on another’s arm can positively affect the outcome of an encounter. Find out how to be “touchy feely” in a good way.
