We all know poker is a game of cards. And that there is an element of gambling involved, we make wagers and bet that our cards are better than our opponents. But there is something unique about online poker that is not necessarily present in most other gambling games. In Hold ‘Em, there are certain hands that have inherent value even before the rest of the cards are dealt.

So in order to succeed in poker online you need to know the most valuable starting hands. First any pocket pair from AA, KK, and QQ are solid starting hands regadless of where you are on the table. Some people would go as far as to include AK suited, as this can make the top two pair or the highest flush or straight.

In later positions you can open up your starting range. AK offsuit, JJ and 10-10 and other suited connectors such as KQ suited.

Finally in late position, you can raise your range even more. Hands from 99-22 become playable depending on the action before you. JT suited or not, and a lot of suited connectors can be played here without risking very much. This spot is also a great spot to reraise in if you have one of the premium hands such as AA-QQ or AK suited.

Remember these hand ranges when you play, and you can drastically improve your chances despite the gambling of succeeding in poker.

Better Blackjack Hands

In poker, you only look at your cards and the communal cards. When you play blackjack, you’re going to be looking hard at both your cards and the dealer’s cards. In poker, there is no dealer cards. This calls for a change of strategy and mindset in blackjack that you cannot use in poker. Once you’ve got an idea of what the dealer is sitting on, you can take a look at your cards. Here are a few statistics of the better (and surprisingly crappy) hands you’ll be holding as a blackjack player that will help you make your decisions.

-21: this is your money hand, literally. If you get it in two cards, it’s a 3/2 payoff. If you get it in more than two cards, you can’t possibly lose. Not a good idea to hit if you have 21.

-20: Is still a great hand, you’re looking great. You don’t have a guaranteed win, but the dealer has to get a blackjack to beat you. I wouldn’t recommend hitting on this either.

-19: This is the last great hand…the odds are still in your favor.

-18: Now you’re starting to get into sketchy territory here. This is where the odds slip onto the dealer’s side. It’s okay, but it’s not a terrific hand.

-17: Now we’re starting to get into garbage time. It’s easy for the dealer to beat, and there are too many cards that can bust you for you too draw. If you’ve got a soft 17 (a 17 with an Ace), hit it every time.

Now that you’ve got a better idea of what you’re dealing with, you can get to work with it.

Sharing Poker Profits: Drawing up a Contract/Backing and Percentages

In a recent article I spoke about a satellite pokern tournament I played in. We set this up so that one person from our poker group would get to play in a main event for $1,000 in a local casino. This isn’t as easy as it sounds though. A satellite in a casino or online is pretty straight forward. If you win, you get some sort of voucher or automatically signed up for the next event. In a home game satellite, it’s harder to make sure that the plan gets executed correctly.

In order to do this, we drew up a contract. There would be nothing worse than playing a winner take all event designed for someone to go to a certain game and they just pocket the cash. To make things more interesting, we also designed a structure in which each of the satellite entrants would get a small percentage of the satellite winner’s action should they make money in the big game. We settled on allowing the satellite winner to keep 55% of his/her winnings in the main event after taxes and tip, and having 45% distributed evenly among the remaining players. To make things worthwhile for the satellite winner, we also drew some parameters to this concept.

The buy in was $1000, so we thought it would be fair for the winner to keep all cash winnings under $3,000 for. He might be playing for 2 days and certainly deserves some decent money for his hard work. We also decided to cap the payouts at $1,000 per individual. So, basically, if the person cashed out for $20k or $100k, he would only have to give up a maximum of $10,000 to the “financial backers”. It would be pretty hard to imagine someone giving more than that up, and also a very large responsibility.

So, with this contract, one person would get a shot to play in a very big buy-in poker tournament, but everyone who lost the satellite would still have the opportunity to make some money as well. Even though they lost, there’s still get a second chance of sorts. I won the satellite, as well as drew up the contract, so I foresee things going according to plan.
