Why Visit Africa on a Cruise?
Thursday, December 17th, 2009Why would anyone want to travel to Africa on a cruise ship? Isn’t Africa the continent where you do safaris on land, travel through dense jungles, or experience real desert climates like nowhere else on earth? That may be the common belief but Africa has some of the most beautiful coastline in the world and with the addition of the Suez Canal you can actually sail all the way around it. Most Africa cruises begin in the Mediterranean and head south and east through the Suez Canal, passing Egypt and the land once known as Mesopotamia, where life on this planet is believed to have begun. These are not short or cheap cruises. The average Africa cruise lasts about three weeks and will cost close to a thousand pounds once all is said and done. If you’re looking for a cheaper cruise you might want to stay in the Mediterranean and do the Iberian Peninsula, Greece, and Italy. Once you pass through the Suez Canal you’ll find yourself on the East Coast in the Red Sea where you’ll pass through the Gulf of Aidan into the Indian Ocean. After you pass Somalia you’ll hit a popular port-of-call for cruise ships in Mombasa, Kenya. This fifteen square mile island has a cultural mix of both British and Arab people, products, and entertainment. A night spent here will be well worth it; a good break after traversing the dangerous waters of the Gulf. In the morning your cruise ship will be headed to Madagascar and then further south to Cape Town, where you’ll most likely disembark from this cruise to fly home or change ships to travel up the West Coast. Sounds breathtaking, doesn’t it? That’s just the East Coast cruise. Travel up the West Coast and experience the wonders of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro, Port Elizabeth and Zanzibar Island. If you’re travelling north you can pass through the Straits of Gibraltar back into the Mediterranean and stop at Barcelona to get a taste of European civilization again. While you’re there you can think of some reasons why you’d want to take another cruise to Africa. You just can’t take it all in the first time.
