How To Choose The Right Bible

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Given that the bible used by most protestant denominations contain the same books, you would think your choices would come down to what kind of cover. Unfortunately choosing the right bible for your needs is a bit more complicated than that. First you much consider the issue of translation. I also want to give you a run down on different types of bibles and their uses. However most types are available in a variety of translations so we will tackle that first.

There is the King James Version, The New Living Translation, The Message, and many others. They all break down into two basic types. There are literal word for word translations. In these each word is individually translated from the original languages. This type of translation tends to be preferred by serious scholars, who are concerned with absolute accuracy. Some also love the beauty of the language in the older translations such as the King James Version. The are also what are called “sense of meaning ” translations. With these the translator(s) aim to get the main idea of what is being said, without matching the exact language. These translations tend to be in more modern language. For this reason they can be easier to understand, especially for new Christians.

Once you have settled on a translation then what ? Next I want to cover some of the main types of bibles you may encounter.

PLAIN VANILLA- these are just the scripture in your chosen translation. They are arranged by book, chapter, and verse just as most of us are familiar with.

RED LETTER- This type is often combined with the other types. In This type the actual words of Christ are printed in red. Many people find having the Lord’s own words highlighted in this way helps their study.

CHRONOLOGICAL- In this type the scripture is arranged in historical chronological order instead of book, chapter, and verse. This arrangement helps many people gain understanding how the different times and events of the bible relate to each other.

IN A YEAR- Most of these bibles are arranged in 365 convenient chunks. One for every day of the year ! Obviously these are designed for people who want a well planned way to read through the entire bible within a year.

PARALLEL BIBLES- These have more than one translation in parallel columns in the same book. I have one with four English translations side by side. You could also get an English/Spanish, or English? Vietnamese Bible for instance. These bibles are for people who want to see how scripture varies between translations. Sometimes seeing the same verse worded differently helps with understanding.

TOPICAL-In these bible the scripture is not arranged in the usual book, chapter, verse format. Instead everything is arranged by topic. All the verse on marriage together, the same with salvation, the church and so on. These bibles are handy for people who want to get all of what the bible says on a subject quickly.

STUDY BIBLES- These bibles contain not only scripture, but extra “helps” to aid your study. Such helps can include articles, maps, commentaries etc. They come in different forms. Some are aimed at the average Christian. Others are aimed at specific people such as couples. I even have one written specifically for counselors.

Many of these types are going to be appropriate for people who want and can afford two or more bibles. But I wanted you to better understand your options. That way you will be better prepared if your needs change. If you can only afford one bible, or are a new Christian, I would suggest a good study bible in a translation you can understand. I recommend a study bible, because the helps involved will help your understanding. It will also give you some of the advantage of other study tools until you can purchase larger separate versions of them.

Durom Cup Hip Legal Issues Not Advantageous for Hip Implant Recipients

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Numerous people who got hip recall used in their hip cup replacement surgical procedures are discovering that there are difficulties that far surpass the average expectations for recovery. These implant recipients are experiencing a lot of uncalled-for pain for longer periods of time, needing a revision surgical operations and enlarged medical costs, and losing revenue by being taken out of the workplace at their regular businesses. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is demanding that that their implant is not conceivably faulty and have basically denied blame for the surgical failures, several patients are filing lawsuits against them and obtaining settlements.

These hurt unfortunate people definitely merit some aid and restitution which unquestionably is why product liability lawyers are suggesting and telling them to initiate the filing of a lawsuit. durom hip implant has been resolving these claims before they go to court. Nonetheless, even if the settlement they are being offered seems like a fair amount, in numerous cases poor people are settling too fast and with no clause put in place for repeat problems if they happen down the road. If they don’t wait to find out what an actual case is worth, individuals may find themselves paying thousands of dollars from their own personal assets when more problems start to surface.

Anyone who thinks they may have a claim against Zimmer needs to start checking into it. If you imagine you might qualify, you should probably telephone a lawyer to be certain. Try to find a lawfirm that operates nationwide and specializes in litigation against defective medical devices. This law firm has done the extra work and setup a special section to do the research and process claims against Zimmer and secure equitable settlements for their customers.

If your orthopedic surgeon tells you that youre going to need revision surgical procedure to resolve your Zimmer Durom hip replacement device, get in touch with an attorney immediately.

As soon as attorney comes to the conclusion that you have a possible case, be prepared to stick it out for awhile in order to get the very best settlement that your attorney can get you. Pay close attention to the wisdom and advice that your attorney gives to you and do not get impatient and demand a quick timeframe for restitution. You may end up losing a lot of money if you arent willing to be patient.

Praying Hands – Are You Using Yours Correctly?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Do you find prayer intimidating? Have you ever said,
“I don’t know how to pray”? If so, you may be
surprised to learn that there is no “right” or “wrong”
method of prayer. Nor is prayer reserved for a handful
of religious professionals.

Prayer is the act of offering reverent petition to God
and an expression of the commitment and trust we have
in God by faith.

Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into
thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to
thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which
seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

When we come before God in prayer and give Him full
control of a situation, we are acknowledging His
ability to bring about a change in that area of our or
someone elses life.

Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask
in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

As a result, God begins to work on the problem with
His all mighty, all knowing, everlasting power.

Over the years prayer has not received the recognition
that it deserves.

Many people feel since God already knows about our
needs, there isn’t any need to tell God about them.

This could turn out to be a very costly mistake!

While it’s true God knows about and is involved in
every area of our life, its also true He wants us to
specifically commit each of our concerns to Him so
that we will learn to depend on Him and His counsel.

Perhaps you sometimes feel you have no one to turn to
with your stress and struggles.

It is not just a matter of having someone to
understand, but of finding someone you can trust.

But you can find reassurance in the fact that God
remains in control and takes care of His faithful
children.

Prayer is one of the greatest contributions we can
make to improve our lives as well as the lives of
others.

Just pray, offering whatever you’re thinking and
feeling to the Lord. Whatever you bring, it’s a start.

As you pray more regularly or more often, the usual
experience is that you start being more truthful in
prayer, you start turning away from what you did
wrong, your attitude becomes more confident, you start
taking the time to listen, you start looking for the
signs of divine response in your daily life, you start
hungering to read the Scriptures, you start wanting to
pray with others, and you think less and less about
yourself.

You will soon find preparations and practices that may
help you be more open to God in prayer as you start
letting the Holy Spirit change you.

When we come in prayer we come as we are Sometimes
scared, Sometimes needy, Sometimes empty, Sometimes
bored, Sometimes furious, but we come.

We come trusting that through prayer God can change
us, and can change the things that happen in our life.

We come trusting that God is with us and builds us up,
that the Holy Spirit prays with us and for us.

We trust that the Lord will lead us to lose our anger,
lead us to repentance, lead us to being open to the
Spirit’s voice, and lead us to love of God and of each
other.

If you feel like a victim, you can pray to God,
instead of irresponsibly allowing the circumstances of
life to overwhelm you. You can begin to take charge of
your life by asking God for the power to make changes.

Or maybe you live with unchangeable circumstances that
effect your life in a major way.

From finding a spouse, to finding a job, from building
a business, to building a life, People frequently pray
for God to bless their efforts with success and in a
success driven society, people of faith often struggle
with the place and pursuit of success.

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and
supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto
with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

God is more than ready to hear our complaints,
appeals, desires and frustrations. Nothing is too big
or too small for the Lord not to take into
consideration.

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every
thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known unto God.

In closing I’ll leave you with Jesus’ instructions on
prayer to His disciples.

Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is
in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the
glory, for ever. Amen.

Earth – Billions of Birthdays?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

The earth began long ago but its age has been a cause of great controversy. If the earth was young evolution, the gap theory, and theistic evolution would be proven wrong. On the other hand if the earth was old, creation and the Bible would be false. While evolutionists believe that the earth evolved about 4.5 to 5 billion years ago, (Taylor), many creationists argue that the earth was created about 6 to 12 thousand years ago according to Biblical records. Obviously, the creationists’ evidence shows the earth is younger than most people think.

Using this evidence, creationists have challenged some of the strongest points for evolution. One problem with labeling the earth old is erosion. Evolutionists say the oceans are about 3 billion years old. On average, 25 billion tons of sediment erode away into the oceans annually. Using those statistics, the oceans would be clogged with mud and sediment if they were that old, but very little sediment rests on the bottom of the ocean (Humphreys 2). “Old earthers claim that the continents are over 2.5 billion years old, yet, using their own assumptions, the continents should have eroded away in 10 million years” (Walker “Eroding Ages”). This suggests a young earth. In spite of the evidence, evolutionists say erosion rates were less before humans came to earth. However, erosion rates have been calculated to have increased only 2.5 times had humans not been on earth from the beginning. Another way evolutionists attempt to counter the attack is that they say the mountains are continually uplifted. Many creationists, then, point out that if that were true the mountains would have been replaced many times. Still, evolutionists believe that the mountains are millions of years old, but if they were replaced by continental uplift, they could not be that old.

Another area of evidence evolutionists use for an old earth is the fossil record. Evolutionists believe fossils are millions of years old. Creationists, however, have found evidence that counters the age of fossils. An example is those brought up by a mudflow in Wootton Bassett, England. The mudflow bubbles continuously and occasionally brings up fossils. One of the fossils found was an ammonite, a prehistoric seashell which evolutionists believe was from the Jurassic time period. The ammonite was extremely well preserved, with several of the ligaments intact. Evolutionists believe the fossil was 165 million years old, but if so it would not be so well preserved. Upon seeing the Ammonite, Dr. Hollingworth, an evolutionist, said “There are the shells of bivalves which still have their original organic ligaments and yet they are millions of years old!” (Snelling “A 165 Million Year Surprise”).

Coal is another rock that evolutionists believe to have taken millions of years to form, but creationists have discovered evidence providing proof that coal forms in a short time. An extremely large brown coal deposit rests in a basin, the Latrobe Valley, offshore of Southeast Australia. Evolutionists believe the coal formed from vegetation that accumulated as peat which sank and formed into coal over millions of years. But most creationists believe a worldwide flood deposited the brown coal. Rootless clay was discovered underneath the coal, but if the coal formed over millions of years, there should be soil underneath the coal. Also ash layers exist in the coal. If plants had grown in a swamp and accumulated, no ash layers would be present. Another problem with the evolutionists’ theory is that the plant fossils found in the coal only grow on mountains and do not match the species of any growing in the surrounding area. However, the same type of vegetation is found on part of New Guinea, New Zealand, New Caledonians, and mountains in Australia. The evidence suggests that the vegetation was carried from elsewhere and deposited in the basin by a flood (Walker “Coal Memorial to the Flood”).

Another old age stone, according to evolutionists, is at the Yellowstone National Park. In a part of Yellowstone on the side of a hill, upright petrified trees can be found. More trees in the side of the hill have not been exposed by erosion yet. The trees are on different levels, and evolutionists think each level represents a forest.

Evolutionists believe the petrified trees were once forests that died and petrified, and another forest grew over the old one. This process repeated itself and took about 40,000 years for the entire formation to form. Creationists have discovered many problems with the forest over forest theory. First the trees lack their major root systems. Next, most of the trees do not have any bark or branches. Another problem is that some of the trees stick up into the next layer. When trees fall they end up lying around in any direction, but the fallen petrified trees throughout the hill all lie the same direction. Also, if each layer was buried in a different volcanic eruption, the mineral content of the earth in each layer would differ, but it doesn’t. Volcanic ash and lava when exposed to the air for a prolonged period of time, turn to clay, but the layers lack clay. The last problem is that when trees all grow in the same area at the same time they all have a similar ring pattern. Since the petrified trees at Yellowstone all have a similar ring pattern, it suggests that they all grew in the same area at the same time (Snelling “Rapid Rock”).

Many creationists think a catastrophe put the trees there. They have found some extremely convincing and recent evidence to support their theory. When Mt. St. Helens in Washington erupted in 1980 it created a major mudslide that wiped out forests and carried the trees down to nearby Spirit Lake. The thousands of trees with few remaining roots that were floating in the lake began to soak up water like they were designed to. As a result, the root end became heavier than the rest of the log and flipped the log upright. As the log became waterlogged it sank. “Debris from the floating log mat and a continuing influx of sediment from the land buried the logs, still in an upright position” (Sarfat 18-21). Because some logs sink faster than others, it created layers. Several creationist scuba divers dove into Spirit Lake in 1985 and discovered about 15,000 upright logs stuck in the mud at the bottom of the lake. In a few years the logs will petrify and they will create a standing petrified forest, just like Yellowstone.

Perhaps the controversy is all based on dating methods. Evolutionists use radioisotope dating to prove evolution. Before evolutionists date a rock they must assume radioactive material is present in the rock. The date they get depends on the amount of radioactive material they assumed was in the rock (Walker “The Way it Really is”), evolutionists can get just about any date they want. Creationists have run some tests and have found, in many cases, the dating method to be wrong. In one case, creationists sent in five samples of volcanic rock from Mt. St. Helens recent eruptions (1980-1986). Using the Potassium-Argon (K-Ar) type of radioactive dating, evolutionists sent the samples back to the creationists with dates of up to 2.8 million years (Swenson 23-25). Other volcanoes have received old dates for young lava flows. In Sicily, Mt. Etna received a .35 million-year date for a 1972 flow and a .7 million years date for a 1964 flow. Another volcano in California called Mt. Lassen erupted in 1915 and received the date of .11 million years. In Hawaii the famous Mt. Kilauea was given a date of 8.5 million years for a flow that was only made in 1959. Mt. Stromboli in Italy erupted in 1963 and was dated to be 2.4 million years old (Snelling “Excess Argon”). In New Zealand some tests were run on five of Mt. Ngauruhoe flows. All of the lava flows were created in the last fifty years. Creationists sent the samples to Geochron Laboratories in Cambridge, Boston; the manager has a Ph. D in K-Ar dating. The oldest date given to one of the samples was 3.5 million years old. Since the tests done on volcano samples have been proven false, the radioisotope dating method is not reliable and it cannot prove evolution (Snelling “Radioactive ‘Dating’ Failure”).

The earth began long ago but its age has been a source of great controversy. While evolutionists believe the earth is billions of years old, young earth creationists believe the earth is only thousands of years old. Much evidence proves evolutionists’ old age theory is wrong and creationists’ young earth theory is right. There is no doubt that creation has been proven true over and over. If people still remain in doubt they need to look closely at the evidence. There is much to support a young earth, as the Bible describes.

Trojan World War

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

TROJAN WORLD WAR: – Homer said there were nineteen battles and we know there was a 400 year dark age that followed this enigmatic period which has almost been immortalized in fairy tales about wooden horses and fair maidens. We have given evidences of white men in the Americas at places like Poverty Point and the mouth of the Amazon (there is much more in the ‘mysteries’ section) as well as allover the world. The victor of the battle in America for the gold or copper and other things like cocaine may well have been the people who stayed behind and decided to have nothing to do with their Empire-building aristocrats back home. Who actually won this war is beyond my ability to discern. It seems the Phoenicians and Berbers or ‘Sea People’ operated as pirates for many years to come. They had been trying to establish some kind of political stability to conduct reasonable business from the time of the Hyksos Kings in 1800 BC.

When did ‘Greek Fire’ actually become a useful weapon and how did oil become napalm? What science was lost during and after this apparently protracted period of war between ideologies? There is no clear nation or alliance of city-states that existed before or after this truly horrific period or centuries of warfare that began with the ouster of Ariadne from Crete, if not before. We think natural gas was used in conjunction with phosphorus and other chemicals known to the agents during this war but that it didn’t produce the kind of heat that vitrifies rock. I think the Biblical stories of bringing down the walls of Jericho may relate to ultrasound or ‘the lost chord’.

It is highly likely that allegiances shifted and new alliances or combatants came and went. The Kelts of the Danube area including the Amazons may even have separated from their Thracian neighbors and the Uighurs may have gained a lot by associating with the Semitic remnants of a previously Phoenician Anatolian group including Sargon and Hammurabi whose ethics clearly went against the women or egalitarian modes of previous island powers. The Milesians who went to Epirus and later Etruria (the Bruttii) clearly escaped according to the Trojan chronicle of Homer and their own historians. Pont and the Armenians would seem to be Hittites who were still known to have given women the right to own land like their brother Hurrians in the era 2000 BC. according to Agatha Christie and her archaeologist husband; but perhaps they agreed to fight despite this on behalf of their neighbors who were patristic. Maybe they remained neutral like Canada did in Viet Nam or as neutral as others who sell themselves to the highest bidder during protracted conflicts.

It is instructive to look at the aftermath and note the Greeks were allied with Phoenicians who gave them their language and (we showed) allowed them free access to their ports even if they took their wives and daughters. Some of these Greek states seem quite Phoenician at some times. But when the Greeks turned on their allies in Sicily at Syracuse much later were they getting back at their lords and masters? When Alexander expanded his Empire he made a pact with the Kelts, and this is well known history; but which Kelts? Was there a Druidic international council that could galvanize the Keltic clandoms in concerted war? No! But there was such an arrangement for many other things of culture and science or business, it appears. Maybe Alexander was a Kelt himself and he made deals with lots of other clandoms like the Galatians who ended up in what is now Turkey and was formerly Pont (another derived name from Phoenix/Phoenician/ Punt/Finias etc.).

Iberia became home to many Milesians and I believe these were Iberians from the Caspian Iberia which has a capital called Tiflis, now. Clearly many Kelts went back to Ireland and Britain from even before the Hyksos period as the Beaker people in 2200 BC. and it appears that many more came in 1500 BC. Was the Trojan War just an extension of the Hyksos wars? Troy III was called Aa-Mu and the Phoenician Brotherhood may well have included remnants of Harappa and Mu (SE Asia?). Pythagoras had a Phoenician parent, but by this time the Brotherhood seems to have been split into many factions. He went against the Sybarites as we know and they were allied with the Etruscans who were allied with Carthage against the Phocaean/Milesians or Iberians who seemed separate from their Venetii Keltic ‘brothers’. Yet the Venetii weren’t against the Kelts or Bruttii when they came to get rid of the Tarquin lineage of Etruscans and Rome became a reality. We will cover this a great deal more under the ‘mystery’ of the Battle of Alalia.

Numerous Greek states seem to have been allied at Naucratis as we showed and it would be logical to assume they were Hyksos/Phoenician a century before. Thus we end up with having to say there was no Greece and that historians are talking about a continuous or corporate entity that seldom (if ever) existed. Pythagoras seems to have had a strong spiritual leaning in his Crotonite followers that were allied with the syncretic hermetic cults, the Therapeutae of Jesus, Heliopolis and later Alexandria’s Gnostics. We would have to say the Cathar ecumenicism may have a root in these groups and that certain groups of Jews and Islamic people (Sufis) were still able to get along for centuries to come. In the final analysis (at this point) we should simply say the battle of ideas continued after the all out battles ended. The pirates and corporate enterprises were seeking marriages and elites became stronger from 2,000 BC. to the time of Jesus. Rather than covering these wars and empires from a Parthian or Hittite and Egyptian perspective we hope the business and theological associations are instructive. It is also necessary to understand the financial import of the American trade that Phoenicians seem to have maintained. Maybe a settlement of sorts was reached where certain enterprises in Greece and Anatolia left the Iberian-Punic interests to control the American trade and they took the Mediterranean in places where the Phoenicians could no longer exercise adequate control.

TROY: – There is good reason to believe this area and Smyrna was inhabited with advanced cultures as far back as 9,000 BC. and Catal Huyuk’s far less important but well preserved site makes one think it would have taken even longer to leave the coast and move inland to establish such an advanced culture in 7,500 BC. Clearly seacoasts had a lot of defensive and trading benefits and there would only be a need to move inland when all the land was spoken for on the rivers running to the Sea.

Troy VIIa seems to have been the site Schliemann claimed to have found all by himself. We will see he did play an important part in showing established archaeology should listen to legend but that he was not all he wanted us to believe either, in this brief forward by Mr. Fagan.

Types of mp3 Players: a Quick Overview

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

MP3 players are pocket-sized electronic devices that have the
ability to not only store, but play music and other sound files.
Although MP3 players are sophisticated devices and there are of
many types, they can be placed into one of three broad
categories. These categories include hard drive based players,
micro hard drive based players, and flash based players. Hard
drive based MP3 players are typically larger and heavier than
their competitors due to the fact that they contain a large
capacity hard drive inside. This however, may be one of it’s
only weaknesses. These MP3 players provide the largest capacity,
ten gigabytes or more, out of the different types of MP3
players. Due to the fact that ten gigabytes equates to roughly
2,900 MP3 files, most consumers buy these players because they
accommodate their entire MP3 collection. Micro hard drive based
MP3 players are similar to their big brothers, the hard drive
based players, except that they are a bit smaller, both in
physical size and internal storage capacity. These MP3 players
hold up to six gigabytes of MP3 files, which equals roughly
1,700 songs. Still boasting a respectable capacity, these
players have won over many consumers due to their light-weight,
compact size. Additionally, both hard drive and micro hard drive
based players commonly contain rechargeable batteries that can
not be replaced for a new battery, but only recharged. If it’s
small size and moderate capacity that you are in search of this
type of player may be just right. Flash based MP3 players are
ultra compact, low capacity players contain no moving parts and
consequently, never skip. Another advantage of these players is
that their size and lack of moving parts allow them to use
minimal power, causing your batteries to last longer. Also,
these players almost always use replaceable, disposable
batteries, allowing you to put in a new battery if your player
should die in the middle of use. However, flash based MP3
players commonly range in capacity from 32 megabytes (roughly 10
songs) to two gigabytes (roughly 570 songs) at most. Therefore,
most consumers with a large music collection tend to shy away
from this type of MP3 player while athletes can appreciate the
sturdy nature of these devices. Some of the different types of
MP3 players include additional features as well. A few of the
hard drive players include a small screen that can display
pictures and video that are stored on the internal drive. Other
players allow for digital voice recording for future playback.

Use these Hot Suggestions to Throw off Abdomen Fat and Acquire Toned Abdominals

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Did you wake up one day and look at yourself critically? Feeling that your potbelly is spreading out or just heading due south. Is buttoning those pants becoming harder and harder? Are you finding the 15 years spent on your bottom looking at Monday Night Football, running through chips and boozing has at long last caught up with you, and you are wearing love handles? Have you lost your 6 pack abs? You are not alone in this pickle and there is hope for you.

If you desire definition in your mid section you should start some ab exercises (http://ab-exercises.org). It does not matter if you are a man or a woman, you can gain from a stronger back. When you tone up one you fortify the other. There are simple exercises to lose the spare tire, such as sit ups and crunches.

Dealing with the lower back you can try lying on your stomach. Do the leg swim movement by gently kicking with knees and feet off the floor. Do repetitions of 15 seconds activity, resting 30 seconds.

You may want to tailor sodium and salt heavy foods from your diet. We tend to connect sodium and salt loaded foods with heart disease and stroke. Sodium can induce water retention which can in turn increase the tummy fat. Don’t add extra salt to foods and avoid processed foods. Drinking water can also help you to lose those love handles. Water not only serves to keep the body hydrated, it also helps your body to metabolize stored fat into energy and cuts your appetite.

You should in all probability consider cutting back on calories from alcohol. Im positive that youre simply as let down as I was to learn that alcoholic drinks do not perform the same function as water in spite of the fact that they are both liquids. Alcoholic beverages contain a lot of what is called empty calories which for men tend to get deposited around the gut creating excessive fat. No need to eliminate alcohol completely, just keep a tally of how much you consume and adjust as needed; same method as adjusting the amount you eat.

The arms play a significant, yet overlooked, role in sprinting and speed development. Without specifically and regularly addressing proper arm mechanics within your speed training program, full speed potential will not be realized. Today we will address this issue so that we can continue to make improvements on the athletic field.

The role of the arms is to stabilize the torso so that power can continue to be efficiently transferred through the hips. It is this ability to transfer power effectively through the center of mass that not only improves rate of acceleration, but also facilitates reaching maximum velocity, maintaining those top speeds and reducing the rate of deceleration.

So, as you can see, the arms both directly and indirectly influence the ability to run fast.

Now let’s get into the specifics of improving our arm action.

When running, it’s very important to keep your hands relaxed. Think about holding a potato chip in each hand. No matter how hard you run, no matter how tired you get, you can’t clench your hands so that the potato chip breaks. This is a good way of thinking about how loose your hands should be at all times when running. When you start to clench your fists tightly, that tightness spreads like through your forearms, biceps, shoulders, neck and face. Once you tighten up and lose range of motion in your arms, it reduces stride length, which is difficult to get back without burning a lot of energy.

While sprinting, it is important to get a full range of motion with the arms. Remember, speed is a product of stride length and stride frequency. Stride length and frequency are determined, in part, by the motion of the arms. If you are lazy or passive with your arm action, you are limiting your potential for speed.

Your front arm angle should be between 60-90 degrees at the elbow and your back arm should be between 90-120 degrees, also at the elbow. If your arm angles fall outside of this range, your running mechanics will be negatively affected. In short, you’ll run slower and get tired faster. When running, arm swing should be initiated at and through the shoulders. You should think of your elbow as being locked in place.

Elbow angle should only change slightly, as a result of elastic response. Range of motion with the arms should generally be hip to cheek. That is, the hand clears the hip in the back and comes up to about cheek height in front. Much more than that, in either direction, will result in over striding which, as mentioned before, will cause breaking and can lead to strains, pulls and tears in the muscle.

When running, emphasis should be placed on driving the elbows down and back. When runners fire their arms straight back, without first driving them down, it often leads to bunched up shoulders, which causes tightness and limits range of motion. It is important to focus on driving the arms back as they are recovered elastically by the stretch of muscles in the shoulder. So, don’t drive your arms up and forward because stretch reflex is going to bring them forward anyway.

Another aspect of arm action is to avoid lateral deviation beyond the saggital plane. What this means is that your arms, when they are brought in front of you, should never cross the midline of your body.

Your right arm should stay on the right half of your body and your left arm should stay on the left side.

When you move your arms laterally, across the midline of your body, you rotate your hips which basically burns much needed energy and makes you run slower and get tired faster, all for no reason other than laziness and lack of concentration. Remember, you compete like you practice, so if you don’t correct technical issues in practice, you can’t expect them to be fixed in competition.

SAMPLE EXERCISE This drill can be practiced either in a group setting, or alone be standing in front of mirror.

Stand with the feet between hip and shoulder width apart. Bring your weight forward onto the balls of the feet. You should be far enough forward that your heels are slightly off the ground, but not so far forward that your toes curl to maintain balance. It is this slight, 2- 4 degree lean, that is ideal for simulating sprinting.

Start with one arm forward, 90 degrees at the elbow and one arm back, also 90 degrees at the elbow. Perform this drill following the guidelines presented in this article.

Arm action at 50% intensity 2 sets of 30 seconds 15 second rest between sets

Arm action at 80% intensity 2 sets of 20 seconds 20 seconds rest between sets

Arm action at 100% intensity 4-5 sets of 10 seconds 25-30 seconds rest between sets
