Beware the Cruising Cult!

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

If you are a “wannabe” cruiser with questions, there are plenty of us out here to give you answers. One of the defining characteristics of the cruising community is our opinionatedness (is that a word?).

But there is a far more insidious aspect to this opinionatedness an evangelical quality that we take on when we talk or write about cruising. We assert, either covertly or overtly, that cruising is a panacea for people like us, we who have rejected the material world, are seeking enlightenment from nature, want to living off the land, crave adventure, or whatever motivators put us onto a floating home. There is a kind of arrogance in our position especially, dare I say it, among sail boaters that implies that we have found “the way.”

As I look over books and articles that I and others in the fleet have written, I recognize potential snags in what we say. We do mean well when we transmit our opinions, but the assertions can be misleading, especially to novice cruisers investing our words with more weight and significance than they should have.

“Go NOW!”

One example is the “Go Now” slogan. It is usually said in the context of “There will never be an ideal time to go, so go now!” Most of us who write and talk about cruising have this message somewhere in what we’re saying. Our point is that it can be really easy to come up with reasons why you can’t take off on a boat. We are trying to keep you from just thinking about it the rest of your life, and are cheering you on to take the leap sooner than later. We talk about the great places we have visited, the challenges we’ve surmounted, the great people we’ve met along the way. Even when we talk about the down sides of cruising, we inevitably wind up saying that the rewards outweigh the discomforts.

I myself listened to the “Go Now” cheer from the crowd. My desire to go cruising overrode other matters in my first and second experiences. I first took off on a boat that was still partially owned by the bank because we didn’t want to do what we needed to pay her off first. Better to go now, right? That monthly payment was a weight around our necks the whole time we were on the water.

The second time I left before I was mentally ready to goI had built a business that was just shifting into high gear. Because we were so focused on cruising and listening to the “Go Now” siren song, I chose to sell the business and leave. Even though I enjoyed the cruise, I still never stopped regretting that choice. I didn’t allow myself to experience fruits from all of my hard work. If I had stayed even just one more year, I could have left feeling a lot more complete about what remained behind.

“Don’t Be a Weenie!”

Another message directed especially at budding first mates comes from the “sisterhood of the water” the distaff side of cruising couples who write and talk about cruising. Almost invariably, we (and I include myself in this group) talk about the lifestyle in glowing terms. Some of us will admit that we first entered it in the shadows of our husbands or boyfriends, but we will go on to list all the fabulous things that have come from the experience. We assert that if we hadn’t made the decision to support our partners in their dream, we would have missed out on the experience of a lifetime. And we imply, usually unwittingly, that it should be okay to leave family and creature comforts behind, that having those (or similar) issues is the mark of a milquetoast.

There are voices that are not being heard. In addition to meeting many women who love cruising, I have met a number of women on the water who were very unhappy. Some were deeply depressed. They missed their families, they missed their homes, they didn’t like sailing, and didn’t enjoy what they considered “roughing it.” And many of them felt very guilty about it. A few even admitted that they were afraid that the relationship with their partners would end if they hadn’t agreed to go cruising!

What makes a woman go cruising against her preferences? That is a very complex subject, and not one I’m qualified to tackle…so I won’t go there, except for one thing. I believe that we - the first mates who do love the lifestyle contribute to the problem unknowingly. I went back and reread some of the stuff I’ve written in the past, then I read material from other women on the water, and it came to me that we may be putting peer pressure on budding first mates. And that I experienced this kind of pressure when I first went cruising.

Don’t misunderstand. I’m glad I did it. I love to cruise. The peer pressure worked on me. I did embrace the challenges and allowed the rewards to outweigh the discomforts. But what about the women for whom the peer pressure didn’t work? Those who gave it a try, found that it wasn’t their cup of tea, but are afraid to say so? Could their unhappiness be avoided? I think so.

A first mate in training needs to be very clear with her partner about the terms under which she will participate that is, what aspects of their cruising life are important to her, what are non-negotiable, and what she will compromise on. For example, flying home to visit family and friends twice a year might be a non-negotiable term; if so, the cost for this item will need to be incorporated into the budget, which might impact how far they will cruise.

On the other hand, she might be willing to compromise regarding how often they will stay in marinas three nights a month, say, instead of the ten or more that she’d prefer in order to save money. Understanding her terms will allow the cruising couple to create a plan for the lifestyle that will suit both of them.

Do This, Don’t Do That!

I recently read an article by a guy who is out cruising, giving advice about how to prepare for a life on the water. The points he made were valid, but I felt my hackles rise as I read. His style of advice-giving was so pompous. He pontificated about the “right” way to do things…the “right” way, of course, being the way that he did it. The subliminal message was that you’d better do the same or you’ll be sorry.

YOU WILL TAKE SAILING COURSES BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

YOU WILL PRACTICE AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY!

YOU WILL CONSTRUCT A BUDGET AND NET WORTH STATEMENT!

If you’re like me, anyone who orders you to follow a particular route in any of life’s enterprises is suspect. The challenge for me with these people is to keep from throwing the baby out with the bath water I have to make a conscious effort to separate their communication style from the information, and then consider the information in its own right.

Please remember that none of us in the cruising village is an expert. The best we can do is give our opinions and suggestions based on our own experiences and style of cruising. You need to decide if the information we’re giving you fits your own circumstances. I will do my best, in giving my own opinions, to refrain from evangelizing and dictating the “right” way. Please forgive me if I slip from time to time after all, I am a cruiser!!

Leg Cramps & Running Cramps - Keeping Things ‘Fluid’

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

On the other hand, for the majority of us, cramps are associated with high heat, high humidity environments where we sweat for extended periods. In this article we’ll discuss the topic of hydration and the steps you can take to completely rule out the possibility of dehydration causing cramps.

The Role of Fluids

The main function of sweat is to cool the body down. The average 70kg/154lb person running at a 6 minute mile pace will burn energy at the rate of about 1000kcal per hour. In a warm climate, this would equate to around 1.5 litres of sweat to remove this extra heat.

When you look at it from this point of view it’s easy to see how an athlete could lose as much as 3 to 4 litres of water per hour!

It only takes a 2 - 3% dehydration or 3lbs of sweat loss for a 68kg/150lb person for body function and exercise performance to be impaired. So, if you want to perform your best and avoid dehydration fatigue and the possibility of cramping from dehydration, you should have a strategy aimed at taking on the correct amount of fluid.

Because you’re burning energy, you also need to take in carbohydrate - however the processing of carbohydrate also requires water . . . about 3ml of water for every gram of carbohydrate you want to fix into the muscles as glycogen. So, in order to replenish your muscle glycogen reserve, you need more water and if you don’t replace it then it will be taken from the blood stream and accelerate dehydration.

A litre of sweat typically contains about 20mg Calcium, 50mg Magnesium, just over 1 gram of Sodium and 1.5 grams of Chloride . . . a good reason why hydrating is better with a sports drink containing these minerals than just with water.

In fact, the use of a sports drink with electrolyte minerals and carbohydrate has three key functions:

1. Whereas an excess amount of water can dilute the blood plasma, possibly leading to potentially life-threatening conditions such as hyponatraemia (low sodium levels leading to swelling on the brain and confusion, seizure and even death) - by contrast, sports drinks will help maintain healthy plasma levels.

2. Drinks containing electrolyte minerals promote thirst and lead to an increase in voluntary intake of fluid.

3. There is evidence that when electrolyte minerals such as sodium and small amounts of glucose are present, the rate of fluid absorption from the small intestine into the rest of the body is improved. The same is true for hydration after the event.

Hydrating During The Race

There are 2 factors that determine how well you are able to get fluid to where it’s needed during a race - Gastric Emptying (how quickly the fluid leaves the stomach) and Intestinal Absorption (how well the small intestine is able to absorb fluid).

Studies have shown that a larger volume of fluid in the stomach as well as the presence of carbohydrate and electrolytes improves the uptake of fluid.

In regard to carbohydrate concentration, the optimal amount is around 2.5g per litre of water (about 4-5% glucose). Higher concentrations tend to slow the process down, however for endurance athletes the benefits of higher energy replacement may be more preferable.

Interestingly, fructose (sugar from fruits) tends to absorb more slowly and may slow down the uptake of water.

Overall, a well formulated carbohydrate/electrolyte drink will increase hydration.

The Constantly Changing World of TV’s

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Let’s face it - with several unique types of tellies to be had, purchasing a new TV’s can definitely be mystifying. Our buying piece aims to take you through some of the key things to mull over when purchasing a new television.

Are TVs Evolving? The short reply is, yes. Not a long time ago just about all televisions were of one type - Cathode Ray Tube (or more regularly known as CRT). While these usual models are still available in the shops, there is a totally new group of tellies just around the corner. The self-styled “digital revolution” has made it doable to get hold of significantly more television programmes and get much superior quality images on your TV screen. The most recent televisions are furthermore more compact and trendy. Some new plasma and LCD tellies are so exceedingly lean that they can be added on your dinning room wall like a picture.

The Different Kinds of TV’s. If your television is more than ten years old, the odds are that it is a prehistoric CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TV. The new set of tellies comes in three key styles - Plasma tellies, LCD TVs and HD (which may consist of both of the other two). Our telly buying guide might aid you grasp the difference:

Plasma TV’s. The most familiar preference for large flat-panel TV’s, plasma screens can be as little as three inches thick - unquestionably thin enough to attach to a wall. The display is absolutely flat, so you can quite simply view the pictures from a wider point of view without causing a reduction in sharpness. Plasma TVs employ a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells to form a crystal clear image. Enjoy crazy low prices on Cheap TV Digital at http://www.digitaldirect.co.uk!

LCD Tellies. Similar to plasma displays, LCD tellies are flat and elegant, consuming a limited amount of area. Available in many numerous dimensions, LCD televisions offer superior resolution images when contrasted with plasma screens. LCD TV’s can be seen from a number of points of views, but in comparison against plasma, there is a noticeable loss of quality. LCD TV’s function via a network of miniscule liquid crystals packed amidst a backlight & a plate of glass.

Exercise and Diet -The Correlation

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

I had a friend who was 40 pounds overweight. One day he decided that as motivation to lose the excess pounds he would enter and train for an upcoming race. The poor guy ran for 6 days a week and much to my surprise, he followed his regimen zealously. 6 weeks go by and the guy has maybe shed about 6 pounds from his desired total. He was running faster and farther than he ever could before but the gut was there to stay. So why after so much exercise was he not achieving his goal? First, because the guy would go out with the rest of his friends and munch down on typical guys’ night out food: pizza, beer, hot wings and pasta, and second, because steady cardiovascular exercise doesn’t burn fat calories the way strength training does.

Muscles use a large amount of calories to keep themselves nourished. They eagerly await those calories that you are ingesting on a daily basis. It isn’t too difficult to hypothesize then that the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. The most important aspect of this is that your muscles don’t have to be particularly working out in order to reap the benefits. A bulging Hulk will burn more calories by sitting down and watching TV then your average fat-bellied, couch potato. The reason again, more muscles equals more calorie burning, regardless of what state your body happens to be in.

The best muscles to work out are the ones in your large muscle groups. These include your legs, chest, back, and shoulders. These groups of muscle build up the biggest mass and in the shortest amount of time. An added benefit to working the larger muscles is that your metabolism kicks into high gear. So what exactly are the types of exercises you should be doing? There are 3 groups that you will need to focus on: Circuit Training, Compound Exercises, and High Intensity running.

Circuit training is in simple words, doing different exercises one after another with very little rest between exercises. By moving constantly and shortening your rest periods, circuit training keeps your heart rate up throughout your workout. This insures maximum fat burn and gives you a great cardiovascular fitness benefit. If you keep your rest to 30 seconds between exercises and 1 minute between circuits, the time needed to get a good overall workout is cut down drastically.

Compound exercises are exercises that work on multiple muscles with one exercise. These exercises not only make your workout more fun, but they also demand more out of your muscles. Remember, more muscle equals greater fat burning. Combine these types of exercises in circuit training and you will definitely keep your metabolism firing. You can start small, but make sure to make an effort to progress. Some good exercises to start out with are squats, bench press, triceps pushdown, lunges, leg curls, and biceps curls.

High intensity running is great to do in conjunction with the rest of your exercises, but try to do it on your off days from strength training. Remember my overweight friend? He was running too but the reason he failed is because he was always running at the same pace. Have you ever seen one of those marathon runners? Notice how they all seem to have a skinny frame. Now compare them to say a sprint runner. Who seems to have the bigger muscles? Sprint runners are always working on the intensity of their workouts since the demands they place on their body in such a short period of time exceed their counterparts. The majority of fat burning in intensity driven workouts is lost after the workout.

So there you have it. Combine all these exercise groups and follow it with a sensible low calorie diet, and be amazed at how the pounds will start to melt away!

Exercise Your Way to a Better Memory

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Exercise is fundamental in maintaining a healthy body. Activities that stimulate the body aid in many areas including keeping our muscles toned, and also in reducing weight. Another substantial benefit to regular physical exercise is that it appears that it aids in boosting the memory.

When we exercise our heart beats at a faster rate. When our hearts beat faster the blood within our bodies flows at a quicker pace.

This translates into more blood moving through the brain. This equals improvement in certain brain functions including memory.

That means that by exercising we are improving our skills to remember many things. Often as we age in particular we become a bit forgetful and naturally associate that as a normal part of getting older.

However, the same exercise that you do to improve how you feel, can also improve your ability to retain information. That’s an incredible bonus.

The type of exercise doesn’t appear to be as important as the duration. Getting your heart up to a certain pace and keeping it there for a specific time is essential.

Therefore it’s wise to choose an activity that you enjoy. Doing something pleasurable helps the time pass quickly and before you know it your memory will have the work-out it needs to stay on track.

Walking outdoors is an inexpensive way to exercise not only your body but your memory as well. A twenty or thirty minute walk several times a week will aid in boosting your memory.

It would also be wise to engage in mental exercises as you are walking. Testing yourself on the names of the streets that you regularly pass, becomes a silent game of memory.

Once you have the street names mastered you can shift your focus to other elements, perhaps house numbers or colors of the homes. This is a wonderful way to boost your memory in more ways than one all at the same time.

Another relaxing and gentle form of exercise is swimming. Many people enjoy daily swims throughout the entire year.

Getting the blood flowing helps in memory function as well as toning the body. Most indoor swimming pools also offer swimming classes that involve aerobics. This is a great method of partaking in exercise.

The instructor demonstrates several sequences of moves that the participants mimic. This also is a great memory game.

The repetition of the exercises helps embed them in the memory. Soon the swimmer is recalling the moves straight from memory.

Going to a gym is also a great way to work the entire body. There are many pieces of equipment that can be used to increase heart rate and blood flow to the brain.

There are also other ways to get a boost to your memory through physical activity that isn’t traditionally thought of as exercise.

One such method is dancing. By putting on some favorite music, moving the furniture and taking a spin around the floor, your memory is getting the exercise it craves. Movement is essential to memory!

That Burning Sensation — Burning a Card in Poker

Monday, September 15th, 2008

To burn a card is to take it from the top of the deck and remove it from play. This has become a common ritual in Texas Holdem and a familiar move to anyone who has watched any televised match. But why do it? It is actually a preventive measure to keep cheaters at bay. Burning offers two types of protection. If you end up in a poker game where the cards are marked, the cheater has plenty of time to see the backing of the top card during the round of betting. Eliminating that card means eliminating that advantage, though of course he can still conceivably see the pocket cards around him, which is one good reason to keep a hand over your cards if you suspect something fishy, or at the least to keep your weaker card atop your stronger. The second advantage of burning a card is to eliminate what is known as Second Dealing. This occurs when a shady dealer knows what the top card is and has the talent to covertly deal the second card from the top whenever he wishes. He can then push the top card to whomever he might be working with in the game. Burning effectively extinguishes this type of manipulation.

Buy a new house with easy loan, 364732 euro in a week

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Different lenders charge different fees. It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner of the real estate when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed.

A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 3 percent. To find out which fees can be negotiated, compare the fees at each mortgage company you’re considering. Both banks and brokers have their strengths and weaknesses. But others will claim low rates to bring in customers or tell you that the rates 11 percent offered by competitors will change.

Many of these fees are fixed but some can be negotiated.

Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others. See which lenders are charging fees 7 percent and for how much. Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately. In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans 9 percent secured on real estate rather than other property and in some cases only land may be mortgaged. Start with credibility. It’s not easy to know if the prices quoted by lenders are reliable. Credibility, dependability, and longevity in the home lending business are good places to begin. So how do you find a lender or broker you can trust’ Some will quote you precise, competitive rates 10 percent. In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower. Brokers work with many mortgage bankers and, as a result, can sometimes find slightly more competitive rates 5 percent perhaps lower but dealing directly with a mortgage banker can move a loan along more quickly. And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. Although most mortgage experts say that rates 8 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 4 percentage.

Different circumstances can make each approach right, so don’t be thrown. See mortgage loan for residential mortgage lending, and commercial mortgage for lending against commercial property. Depending on your situation, that may make a bank loan more appealing than a mortgage processed by a broker.

While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt of 8 percent.

The Thought behind Today’s Eye-Catching LCD Tellies

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

When Panasonic first began building a brand new flagship array of TVs somewhere back around the year two thousand, their aspiration was:

(+) To offer picture performance so genuinely, television audiences would deem that they are not merely watching but really witnessing the action.

(+) To highlight the confidence of “really being there” by plunging the television spectators in first-rate audio.

(+) To improve the spectators experience by making a shiny, classy, yet entirely inconspicuous television that will not distract for more than a second from what’s going on on-screen.

(+) To make using the TV as easy as actually possibly while furthermore taking advantage of its networking possibilities.

(+) To reproduce this goal, the newest product was to be branded VIERA: representing a new VIsion ERA. The end result came to be the best selling and award-winning VIERA range of Plasma and LCD TV’s that are in stores currently, giving you the following improvements:

Picture performance: Equipped with Panasonic’s exclusive V.Real II / V.Real Pro II equipment - the upshot of years & years of study & advancement that has spanned the breadth of the broadcast chain from beginning TV cameras all the through to TVs in your living rooms - each & every VIERA offers pictures of stupendous authenticity & beauty and places you solidly at the heart of the live action.

Unequalled sound: Featuring up-to-date digital tuners & some super-slim inconspicuous loudspeakers all housed in the sleek and lean structure of the Panasonic VIERA itself, V.Audio sound absorbs you in the on-screen action. Find amazing prices on cheap Sony 26 inches LCD TVs at Sound and Vision. Visit the Sound and Vision website.

Shiny yet inconspicuous style: From the telly screen to the television stand, VIERA has stunning smooth curves that are almost organic in look. This original approach has been the marque of VIERA tellies since the begin and offers the notion of nearly a “floating” display - that doesn’t divert you from the on-screen world. Furthermore, VIERA tellies have been created from the ground up with the surroundings cautiously in mind & feature replenishable bamboo amps, lead free building, & best practice production.
